This is one of my oldest and dearest friends, Bill. We spent our last night here at his place. He braved the Los Angeles traffic to pick us up at the train station, took us back to his lovely home and treated us to a delish Thai dinner. Thank you, my friend.
The other picture is of Doug and I and my cousin Clare. I wouldn’t be writing this or going to China if it weren’t for her.
I also have to thank Doug for being willing to take ten weeks out of his life to walk across China with me- during the rainy season no less. I love you very much. How did I get so lucky?
Would have been so nice to connect with you guys while you were here, but you all have greater places to be. Good luck on this trip! I hope it’s everything you’re looking for it to be.
It was a short and purposeful visit. We’ll catch you on the way back!
Oh my god!!! You are really going to do this. I should have realized that it was the Micae-Doug combo that cooked the idea up and therefore the last thousand miles of a wild and unpredictable journey will come to a glorious end. Bravo! Do find out what killed your Uncle, and try to avoid the same pitfall. We’ll be with you every step of the way (not). Probably wise to make the trek without the whole cheering section as the whining would have worn you down before you even deplaned.
You go, Guys….hugs, Sallye, Dave and Julian, the armchair adventurers.
Sallye, he died of malaria and Doug and I both have meds for that. I owe lots of credit for this trip to my cousin Clare. She’s the one that suggested that someone from our family finish the trip for him. Thanks to Clare are in order.
We will be following your journey with interest and prayers that it is all you hoped for and more. My grandmother, Marie (Martinet) Halisky was Uncle Hippolytes sister. My moms name was Theresa. Which sibling of Hippolyte are you a descendant? The family has always remarked how I look so much like Uncle Hippolyte, but I’m a sailor, not a walker.
I’m great grand daughter to Eduard. My grandfather was Robert and my father was Ronald. Thanks for your interest. It means so much to me.
Can you ask around. Does anyone know what happened to his journal? I’d like to copy it,take it to Louisiana and have a linguist translate it. I hears it was written in french creole.
