High on our list of priorities was finding my great-great uncle’a grave site. With a lot of help remotely from a man named Peter and then more help from his friend Luxi, a Dali local, and then more help from a farmer we were at last able to locate it. We left some flowers for him, took a few pictures (I shed a few tears , ok… a lot) and headed to what is now called New Dali. New Dali is where he actually died, next to the police station. We went to the museum, then to the library and lastly we went to the current police station but we had no luck. I wanted to begin our walk from where he died in 1922 but New Dali is now a sprawling city with roads 6 lanes wide running through it so I will have to be satisfied with starting somewhere in New Dali.

Wait. Internet connection is spotty here and I’m doing everything from my cell phone.
He is my great grandfather.
Earl, do you know anything about his journal? What became of it? I would love to copy it and take it to Louisiana and have a linguist look at it. I heard it was written in French Creole. Could you ask around for me? It would mean a lot to me.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing!
